Mindful Monday: The Strength of Gentleness

Even on this long weekend, there’s time to be mindful—maybe even especially because of the holiday. Yesterday’s sermon continued a series on the fruit of the Spirit, and the focus was on gentleness.

Who do you know who exudes gentleness? We often think of gentleness as weakness, but in reality, it requires remarkable strength. In fact, it is often the strong who can choose to be gentle.

Gentleness is kindness expressed—kindness in tone, in approach, in how we listen, and how we respond. It’s not passive; it’s intentional. In the workplace, gentleness can speak louder than words—it’s a way of living out our values without needing to defend them.

For attorneys and professionals, the idea of pairing strength with gentleness is not only possible, it’s powerful. Strong advocacy doesn’t require harshness. Leadership doesn’t require force. Persuasion doesn’t require volume. Gentleness doesn’t diminish strength; it amplifies credibility, builds trust, and creates space for collaboration.

So how will you express gentleness in your life and work this week? Maybe it’s pausing before responding in frustration. Maybe it’s engaging in active listening with a client or colleague. Maybe it’s softening your tone without softening your resolve.

Gentleness—kindness in action—isn’t just good for our personal lives. It’s also the mark of professionals who lead with both strength and grace.
